Michigan Horse Council 2008Volunteer of the Year Award

Each year the Michigan Horse Council recognizes a Volunteer of the Year. This award was designed to honor outstanding volunteers within the Michigan Horse Council Membership.

 Babe Hollis

The MHC Volunteer for 2008 has had a love of horses her whole life and even owned her own horse during the late years of the depression thru the early war years.

As a young family woman and mother, she had always wanted her own horse farm. She realize a dream come true as a young grandmother, and the wonderful woman that she is, she wanted to share her dream with her granddaughters.

Our Grandmother volunteer this year is none other than our Babe Hollis, of Dexter, MI. Babe has been a member of the Washtenaw County Mounted Division in the 70’s when there weren’t a lot of women in that area. In the 80’s, as her granddaughters got older, she became very involved with her county 4-H programs, sponsoring her granddaughters and other youth in the area. During that era, Babe, her niece and two granddaughters joined the Pinto organization. Babe still shows her own Pinto-Arab on the show circuit and has competed many times at the Pinto Nationals.

Babe has been involved with the Michigan Horse Council and the Expo ever since it was held at the Civic Arena. She has been very involved over the years with the MHC information booth, and coordinating volunteers to man the booth.

When the Expo moved to its current location at the newly built MSU Pavilion, Babe had just the person to run the gate and direct traffic into the area. She called on her daughter, Coleen, who was three years running top woman off road racer in the U.S. When she completed her competition years, Coleen for many years worked the staging area for ESPN for their off road racing program. So now many of you know another member of the Hollis family.

Babe has always been a delightful helper and honored member of our Expo committee for many years. The Michigan Horse Council is pleased to present the 2008 Volunteer of the Year Award to Babe Hollis.
